Isn’t that a lovely name for a seaweed?

Found in muddy bays along the California coast,  Herring tend to lay their eggs in this red algae, both in San Francisco and Tomales Bays.

Combined, the roe and algae fetch a high price in Japan where they constitute a delicate salad.
